A fugitive wanted on suspicion of embezzling millions of yuan from the Shanghai bank he worked for almost 20 years ago has been formally charged with the crime, prosecutors in Songjiang District said yesterday.
Wang Guoqiang, 47, is accused of stealing 3.2 million yuan ($500,000) between January and October 1996, while employed as an assistant to a department director at a branch of Agricultural Bank of China in Songjiang.
Shortly before the bank was due to carry out an audit in October of that year, Wang fled to south China's Guangdong Province where he lived until being detained by police in July, prosecutors said.
A trial date has yet to be announced.
