A car driver, who caused chaos on downtown streets in Shanghai last week, has been arrested for dangerous and drunk driving, police said yesterday.
The driver surnamed Tang drove relentlessly for 3 kilometers with a man holding on to his windshield. The unnamed man, playing a good samaritan, tried to stop Tang while he was escaping from a police check point in the early hours of last Wednesday on Xujiahui Road in Shanghai, police said.
Having allegedly consumed two bottles of wine before driving home around 3am on Wednesday, Tang started to reverse the car when he spotted the check point, where officers were screening drunk drivers, police said.
Tang then struck a passer-by, who tried to stop him from fleeing, but he kept driving with the man hanging on to the car hood with two police cars in chase. The man was not injured during the ride.
Police said Tang did not cooperate even after stopping the car and had to be subdued after police broke open his car window.
Tests later showed his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. He also ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the street during the chase.
