A driver has been arrested for dangerous and drunk driving after causing chaos on the streets in Shanghai in the wee hours of morning last Wednesday, police said.

The driver, surnamed tang, dragged a passer-by, clinging to his car hood, for 3 kilometers until he was forced to stop in front of stationary cars at a traffic light. The police said he was trying to help them to stop the errant driver.

Trouble started when Tang came up to a police road check on Xujiahui Road about 3am on Wednesday. He stopped the car for a while, and after noticing the drunk-driving checks, started to reverse his black Benz. In the process, he hit a sedan at the back.

Tang then struck a passer-by, who tried to stop him from fleeing, but he kept driving with the man hanging on to the car hood until he was forced to stop in front of a line of waiting cars at an intersection.

Police said Tang still did not cooperate after stopping the car and had to be subdued after police broke open his car window. Several passing vehicles had tried to block his way as he tried to flee in his car, police said.

The driver told police he had a bottle of yellow-rice wine as well as red wine. He said he was shocked to see the man jumping on to his car and slapping his car window.

"I was already very nervous and the thought of him maybe trying to cheat me over signs of injury made me even more nervous," he said.

Test later showed that his blood alcohol level broke the legal limit. Tang also ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the street during the chase.
