A survey by Shanghai educational commission find that more local pupils are having sufficient sleeping time last year than in 2011 but the average sleeping time for middle school students seem to be decreasing.
Among 21,800 surveyed fourth graders, 49 percent say they spend at least nine hours on sleeping each day in 2014, while only 44 percent said so in 2011, according to the survey report released today.
More than 33,000 middle school students were surveyed and 12 percent say they have more than eight hours of sleep every day, while the number was 13 percent in the same survey in 2011.
The commission said authorities and schools need to do more to reduce pressure on students.
The Education Ministry has recommended that primary school pupils should have at least 10 hours of sleep per day and middle schools students should sleep for more than nine hours a day.
