Sixteen people have been detained for allegedly forcing six men into spending tens of thousands yuan in a bar as they dated girls, Shanghai's Baoshan District police said.

The suspects put up fake profiles of girls on the dating websites to attract men. They then sent the men's contact information to the girls who then invited them out on dates at the Asina Bar on Dahua Road.

In April, one of the guys told police that he paid about 47,000 yuan ($7,400) on wine and fruit. He also claimed that he was threatened by staff at the bar to pay up.

Police said all the victims paid either by cash or bank cards for fear of being beaten up or losing face in front of the girls.

While raiding the bar, police found over 100 bottles of fake foreign wine. Thirteen suspects were detained at the time, while three others, including the supposed mastermind, surnamed Sun, was held later.
