Yin Yanrong, 25, a native of Xinglong Village in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, married just 12 days ago.
His father said the couple were expecting a baby.
Villagers said Yin was a hero who once saved a 6-year-old girl from the sixth floor of a building that was ablaze.
Several firefighters are being treated at Tianjin's Teda Hospital, 3 kilometers from the blast site.
Several windows at the hospital were damaged by the explosions and a few staff and patients suffered minor injuries from flying glass.
Li Qing, a doctor at the hospital, said some firefighters were so badly injured they were barely recognizable when they were brought in for treatment.
"Firefighters were the most seriously injured, and a few already died when they were rushed to the hospital," Li said.
One of those who died was just 18 years old.
Li said one man told him they knew their lives were at risk but it was their duty.
"I was deeply touched by his words and I was in tears after returning to the office," Li told the newspaper. "As doctors, we are too familiar with death, but they are too young to experience this."
