Jia Jia the giant panda will hopefully break a world record soon, becoming the longest living panda.

Jia Jia, now living in Hong Kong Ocean Park, will celebrate her 37th birthday later this summer.

Grant Abel, director of animal care at the park, has more about the milestone birthday.

"It is rare for pandas to live to this age class. And she is approaching to become the eldest panda to have lived under human care. It's probably equivalent to someone, a human person, who would be over a hundred years of age."

Jia Jia's caregivers say they are considering sending an application to Guinness World Records after celebrating her birthday this summer.

The panda was born on the Chinese mainland in 1978, and was gifted to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the second anniversary of the city's return to China.

The current record holder for the oldest panda ever in human captivity was Du Du who died at the age of 37 in 1999.
