China has praised the latest efforts in Afghanistan to advance the peace and reconciliation process.

This comes after the first official meeting between the Afghan government and the Taliban since President Ashraf Ghani assumed office last September.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying:

"China thinks highly of the meeting. We believe this meeting is conducive to driving forward the progress of peaceful reconciliation in Afghanistan. We also appreciate the flexible attitude and common aspiration all parties expressed at the meeting to push ahead with the meeting, as well as the progress of peaceful reconciliation."

After the meeting, the two sides have agreed to hold the next meeting at a mutually convenient date after Ramadan.

The meeting was held in Pakistan on Tuesday, which was also attended by representatives from China and the United States.

China has promised close cooperation to promote the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
