Jinan City in east China's Shangdong Province is set to invest 30 million yuan to recruit around 570 security guards for local public buses in 15 major routes.

Each bus will be staffed with one security guard to guarantee the safety of double-decker buses and the buses carrying a large number of passengers for one year.

The security guards will inspect and check the bus stations and carriages to prevent passengers from taking any inflammables and explosives items or knives to the station or on board the buses.

They will also take the responsibility of dealing with any violent incidents or emergencies on the bus and provide guidance to passengers in case they have to evacuate the bus.

Local authorities say they have decided to invest in boosting security in buses after several arson attacks on public buses were recorded all over China in the past few years.

The city will use a bidding process to obtain professional services from security service companies to ensure the safety of passengers on buses.
