The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, will limit the amount of visitors to 80,000 per day starting mid-June, the Beijing Times reported on May 15, 2015.

The plan aims to alleviate overcrowding and improve visitor-experience at the Forbidden City.

Shan Jixiang, the Director of the Palace Museum, says that limiting visitor numbers is a complex, time-consuming project that requires systemic preparation, so as to guarantee that visitors will know the proper time to visit the site. Otherwise, the limitation will cause misunderstandings between the museum and visitors and lead to failure of the scheme.

Shan says the Palace museum has installed automatic ticket issuing and checking systems last year to make preparations for its plan to limit visitor numbers during peak seasons.

The Palace Museum will also adopt a real-name registration system for Forbidden City entry.
