Twelve people were injured in a panic-driven stampede in a subway station in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, this morning, the city's Metro operator said.

The incident started with a passenger fainting out on the platform of Huangbeiling Station at 8:30 a.m. The others went panic without knowing what took place, soon leading to a stampede.

It's unclear yet why the passenger had collapsed.

The injured passengers were sent to local hospitals. All of them suffered slight injuries and are in stable condition, local health authorities said.

"I was waiting for the subway then. Suddenly I heard several women screaming and then hundreds of people began to run towards our side. It was chaotic... Bags, shoes, phones, breakfasts were left all around the ground," a passenger said on Weibo.

Authority then evacuated the station to deal with the aftermath. The station was put back into normal operation a while after, local authorities said.
