A former national football player has been detained in Shanghai for beating up a taxi driver in front of a hotel early yesterday, police said.
Gao Feng, 43, who retired from football in 2003, was reportedly drunk when the incident happened. Local news portal thepaper.cn reported he had also tested positive for an unknown drug.
A 36-year-old actor Nie Yuan, who was with Gao at the time of the incident, has also been taken in for questioning, police said.
The driver, whose name was not revealed, was being treated in the hospital for injuries.
Gao had an argument with the driver in the lobby of Jin Jiang Tower at about 5:50am. Witnesses said he beat up the driver following the argument after which he damaged some of the properties of the hotel.
But hotel officials said business in the hotel was not affected by the incident.
Gao and Nie have been staying in Shanghai to record the "Dancing With the Stars" shows of Dragon TV.
Nie was a finalist on the show which finished the season on Sunday evening, while Gao, who was eliminated earlier in the show, was invited to take part in the final act.
The hotel is located at the crossroads of Changle Road and Ruijin No.1 Road in Huangpu District in downtown Shanghai. Police said they were still investigating the case.
