Authorities in Beijing are promising to strengthen supervision of self-organized gatherings in local scenic spots during the Spring Festival.

The move is to ensure the safety of visitors to various sites.

Beijing's municipal authorities say they're going to take certain security measures, including supervising visitors' flows and strictly enforcing maximum capacity rates at any popular activity.

Guidelines from the Beijing Municipal Tourism Administration say density levels should be controlled at "0.7 square meters per person indoors, 1 square meter per person outdoors and 2 square meters on the street."

Organizers of events which break the rules may lose their licenses or have their events shut down.

The increase in supervision comes in the wake of the deadly New Year's Eve stampede in Shanghai which left dozens of people dead and injured.

A number of large-scale activities are set to be held in Beijing during the Spring Festival, including temple fairs, lantern displays and carnivals.
