A road collapsed into a sinkhole last Saturday after a basement in a residential house, owned by a deputy to Xuzhou People's Congress, was dug out.

The sinkhole occurred on Deshengmen Street in the Xicheng District of Beijing. It was caused by a collapse when workers were attempting to dig a basement 18 meters deep under a house, which was unauthorized.

The house owner, Li Baojun is a deputy to the local People's Congress in Xuzhou, east China's Jiangsu province.

The region where the house is located is one of the 25 historical and cultural protection areas of Beijing's old city.

Renovation and restoration need to be approved by the district planning bureau.

The bureau revealed that the construction is illegal, as the deputy didn't go through any procedures for it.

Just last year, the deputy was punished for a violation of construction.

After three days of repair work, the sinkhole has been paved, and the traffic on the road has returned to normal.
