Flight from Indonesia to Singapore loses contact

An AirAsia flight from the Indonesia city of Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, reports said.

Indonesian media said 162 people were on board the plane, including 155 passengers and seven crew members.

The plane, an Airbus 320-200, from Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a Transport Ministry official.

The official, Hadi Mustofa, said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

China's Foreign Ministry said it is closely monitoring developments in missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Sunday.

China is deeply worried about the safety of the passengers and crew and offers condolences to their families, Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement.
