A French-style school building that dates back 89 years has been moved more than 50 meters on its campus in Huangpu District.

The three-story building in the Shanghai Qixiu Experimental Middle School on Sinan Road was moved as it posed a fire hazard, said officials.

It was located too close to a teaching building and an auditorium on the site, blocking two doors.

The 900-ton structure also prevented sunlight getting into classrooms, they added.

In an operation that took two weeks, it was rolled on tracks a total of 53 meters and rotated almost 94 degrees clockwise, said the Shanghai Xianwei Civil Engineering Co Ltd, which was in charge of the project.

The move required the approval of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as the school adjoins the former residence of Dr Sun Yat-sen and is part of the Hengshan-Fuxing Road Historic Reservation Area.
