Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter says he believes China's relationship with the United States must be based on "mutual respect".

In an exclusive interview with China Central Television, the former U.S. president stated that the things that unite the two countries are more important than any differences.

"It's much more important that we have trade in commerce between our business and professional communities, and also that we have tourists that go back and forth."

The bilateral relationship between China and the US was tested recently after a comment by President Barack Obama describing China as a "free rider."

However, Carter said he does not believe the comments are representative of the views of the U.S. government.

"I don't agree with a phrase like 'easy rider.' And I think that President Obama's administration, or perhaps the news media, misinterpreted what he said."

Carter, who was heavily involved in the normalization of China's relations with the United States, also praised China's economic reform and the prosperity it has brought to the country over the last four decades.
