Police in Guangdong have seized nearly a hundred million yuan in counterfeit money in Jieyang city.

The fake 100 yuan notes have serial numbers starting with M3W96.

Luo Ziyao, an investigator at the Economic Crime Investigation Bureau of Guangdong Provincial Public Security, says the fake notes look real.

"The fake money has an uneven surface, printed by a paper press machine. It can even print the anti-counterfeiting mark resembling the real one."

The counterfeiters had been selling their fake currency online.

An unnamed police officer, who is in charge of the case, says market vendors are also targeted.

"These notes are mostly circulated in markets, especially meat markets. Meat vendors cannot really sense the difference between real and fake notes when touching the money with greasy hands."

These notes have been found circulating in Beijing, Guangdong, and Shandong since March.

At the same time, in a separate case, fake money has also been found in Guangxi, but People's Bank of China says those fakes are distinctive from real currency.
