Blood ties with Jaycee Chan cut over drugs

The Shanghai Blood Administration Office said it has no plans to renew its "ambassador" contract with Jaycee Chan in the wake of his recent drug bust.

A one-year deal with Chan — the 31-year-old son of film star Jackie — ended in June and was not extended, the organization said, adding that there is no possibility of any future cooperation.

Chan and Taiwan movie star Kai Ko were detained earlier this month after testing positive for marijuana.

Despite ending the ambassador contract in June, the deal the organization had with Chan on a range of advertisements promoting blood donation was not scheduled to expire until the end of this month, it said.

However, after people complained about Chan's appearance in the ads, which were still showing at Metro stations after the scandal, the office arranged for them to be taken down, it said.

A new ambassador has yet to be appointed, it said.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Blood Center yesterday appealed for people's complete honesty when making blood donations.

"Donors must take responsibility for the information they provide on the consent forms," official Meng Yan said.

"We have had some people tell us after making a donation that they had taken drugs, in which cases the samples were immediately destroyed," she said.

Under current rules, donated blood has to be checked for diseases like hepatitis B, C and the HIV virus, but there are no mandatory tests to determine if the donor has taken drugs, Meng said.
