A foreigner who was shot by police after threatening pedestrians with a knife and resisting arrest died in a Foshan City hospital in Guangdong Province on Sunday, according to a newspaper report.

The man, whose nationality was not provided by police, was seen chasing pedestrians while wielding a knife in front of a shopping center in Foshan on Sunday evening, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Police arrived and trapped the man on Huangqi Bridge. The man attempted to attack the officers and police fired two warning shots into the air, according to the report. The man didn't stop and they fired two more shots, hitting him in both legs, the report said. He was sent to the hospital and pronounced dead about two hours later. The cause of death was still being investigated.

A urine test showed the man might have taken methamphetamine before the incident, the newspaper said.
