A  driver who drove off dragging a police officer who had stopped him for being on the wrong side of the road has received a six-month detention.

The driver, surnamed Jin, had been arguing with his passenger before the incident on March 24 at Tacheng Road in Shanghai's Jiading district, according to local prosecutors.

To avoid getting stuck in traffic, Jin drove on the wrong side of the road and was spotted by a traffic police officer, surnamed Qin.

When she approached the vehicle to question Jin, he accelerated away.

Qin caught hold of the car window frame as it made off, and was knocked over and dragged for several meters.

Jin stopped when a pedestrian gestured that something was wrong and he heard Qin beating on the car door.

The officer suffered some bruising to her left elbow.

Jin was held by other police officers who attended the scene.

The incident led to long tailbacks on Tacheng Road.
