40 flights cancelled, 100 delayed at Shanghai airports due to shower

Some 40 flights were cancelled and over 100 were delayed at Shanghai's two airports on Tuesday morning due to heavy rainstorm and lightening that also flooded some roads within the city.

A total of 46 flights to Beijing, Guangzhou and other Chinese cities were cancelled at the Hongqiao International Airport by 11am that was affected more severely, while some 60 other flights were delayed at Pudong.

Most flights between Shanghai and Beijing, the busiest flight route at the city's airports, were delayed or cancelled either because of the weather or the air traffic controls since last night.

The city's weather authority issued a yellow alert, the third highest, for rainstorm at around 7am as over 30 monitoring stations in the city's downtown Xuhui, Putuo and Changning districts and Pudong New Area as well as the suburb Qingpu Minhang and Jiading have witnessed heavy rainfalls of 50 millimeters per hour.

The meteorological bureau of Pudong upgraded the rain alert to the orange, the second highest at 9:30am.

Some roads in Pudong and Jiading were flooded around 9am with water accumulated in many major roads.
