Photos of six foreign men making fun of a heavily drunken Chinese man who had apparently lost consciousness on a Beijing street in the wee hours Sunday have stirred anger and raised the attention of the police.

In the four photos posted online, the six foreigners giggled and took photos with the drunken man lying on the ground. They also carried him on their shoulders and left him in the middle of the street while taking pictures. The drunken man was left with his shirt rolled up and abdomen exposed in some of the photos.

The Beijing Times revisited the site near Beijing Workers' Stadium and confirmed with several witnesses that the incident took place around 5:30am Sunday. A witness surnamed Xu told the newspaper that he saw the man lying on the sidewalk, smelling strongly of alcohol.

"He apparently was heavily drunk," Xu reportedly told the newspaper.

Then Xu said he saw the six foreigners approach, observe the drunk man and start to make fun of him.

"They stepped on his body and head, and then began to raise him over their shoulders and put him down by turns again and again to take photos," Xu said.

He said the acts lasted for about 20 minutes before they moved him to about 100 meters outside a stadium gate.

"The foreigners continued making gestures despite pedestrians walking by. When the pedestrians looked at them, they said dirty words to them and even put up their middle finger repeatedly," Xu said.

The newspaper reported finding several other witnesses who gave similar accounts

"The drunken man seemed to be alone and had lain there for awhile before the foreigners came," said a rickshaw driver. "They even put him down at the middle of the road. They behaved rude and unbridled. Nobody dared to stop them."

A pub security guard told the newspaper he recognized the foreigners and that they visited pubs in the area often and that "they treated people really rudely."

Beijing police reportedly said it would be hard to track down the foreigners involved and said they did not receive a call that morning concerning the incident. Local police said they would increase patrols around the stadium area.

Many netizens have left comments online criticizing the foreigners for their behavior. The Henan provincial police said on its official Weibo account: "It is China here, and don't just be an onlooker! Alarm the police when there's an emergency."
