Shanghai police smashed an online soccer gambling network, detaining 32 people and seizing more than 2.4 million yuan ($386,400) and froze 12 bank accounts, officers said yesterday.
They learnt about the gambling ring in February and discovered that top members were obtaining accounts from overseas gambling websites since 2013.
The three network organizers, all in their 40s and 50s, then served as the domestic agents of the foreign sites and lured in local gamblers.
After a four-month investigation, 32 people were detained on June 24 from 10 districts of the city. Police also seized 20 computers the suspects used.
Police have cracked 42 online gambling cases this year.
