South Korea's Gender Equality and Family Minister, Cho Yoon-sun, has been specially chosen to act as the "first lady" of South Korea for protocol and reception purpose during Chinese president Xi Jinping's visit to the country, China Central Television reported on Thursday.[Special coverage]

Xi, accompanied by his wife, Peng Liyuan, is currently on a two-day state visit to South Korea. He sat down with South Korean president Park Geun-hye, where the two have reached agreements on a number of issues, including free trade talks, nuclear proliferation and maritime demarcation.

Yoon-sun's appointment as "first lady" is a departure from protocol used at past events of this nature. Generally, the position remains vacant, due to the fact that President Park Geun-hye is currently single.

The July 3-4 trip is Xi's first visit to South Korea since he took office, but it is his fifth summit meeting with Park.
