Rabies vaccinations have increased about 30 percent since the summer started due to higher temperatures, according to a clinic in Shanghai.

A clinic employee said ill-tempered dogs and cats are more prone to biting people and they are handling up to 70 rabies vaccinations a day.

The employee said that since dogs and cats don't have sweat glands, the heat makes them more susceptible to sudden mood swings.

A woman surnamed Wu brought her son to a clinic in Minhang District for a rabies vaccination after their dog bit him. Wu was shocked because she said their dog was usually very obedient.

Rabies can be fatal in serious cases as the virus damages the central nervous system. Anyone bitten by a dog or cat needs to seek medical attention as quickly as possible.
