Shanghai police have stopped 180 drug users in vehicles at on-ramps to city highways since April 20.
More than 50 of them were detained for driving after taking drugs, Qingpu District police said today.
In one case, police stopped a SUV at the entrance of Shenjiahu Highway (S32) on July 16. The driver, surnamed Yu, had a history of drug use, police found after checking his identification. Though Yu denied having taken drugs, police took him to an inspection station for a urine test, which was positive. He was then detained.
On May 10, police found 1 gram of methamphetamine and some drug paraphernalia in a taxi at the entrance of Huchang Highway. The driver didn't have a license and was held by police for further investigation.
Drug users face fines, detention, re-education and other punishments depending on the seriousness of the case, police said.
