A museum in Baoshan District that commemorates the Battle of Shanghai, a 1937 conflict in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, is to be redeveloped as a memorial theme park, an official said yesterday.

The new facility, which is scheduled to open next year, will include a new-look museum and an outdoor area featuring models and sculptures relating to the battle, said Tang Lei, the museum's curator.

The Battle of Shanghai ran from August 13 to November 9, 1937, and is regarded as one of the major conflicts in the war.

It involved 800,000 troops from the two sides, of which more than 300,000 were killed.

The decision to upgrade the museum, which was built in 2000, was born out of the need for more space, Tang said.

As well as a much larger exhibition hall, the new facility will have an outdoor area, which will be built on the site of Linjiang Park, he said.
