New rules for courts on standardizing procedures for commuting sentences and parole took effect on Thursday in Beijing, China's capital, according to legaldaily.com.cn.

43 cases of sentence remission have been publicized on the website for the first time by the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court.

The public can submit their opinion as to whether they disagree to criminal remission applications online, with the results being taken into consideration in the final verdict.

The new regulations are aimed at preventing the rich and powerful from bribing their way out of prison.

Chinese ex-soccer referee Lu Jun, who is now behind bars for graft, is eligible for a sentence reduction of one year as a result of good behavior, according to the website of the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court.
