Shanghai plate rules tightened

Holders of temporary residency permits will no longer be allowed to take part in the city's car license plate auction, the Shanghai Traffic Commission announced yesterday.

This is to ease pressure on demand for Shanghai licence plates, where bidders currently have less than a 1 in 10 chance of being successful. Six-month temporary residency certificates are issued to people working in the city for short periods.
