The number of air purifiers imported to China through Shanghai Customs in the first quarter rose 170 percent year on year to 168,000, authorities said yesterday.
The total value of the products — more than three-quarters of which came from South Korea — increased 260 percent to 210 million yuan (US$33.7 million), they said.
Since October, monthly air purifier imports have seen consistent double-digit growth.
The spike in demand is driven by the hazy weather in China and a lack of confidence in locally produced brands, customs officials said.
