Two women who performed sex acts and posed nude for paying clients via WeChat have been detained, police said yesterday.
The migrant workers, surnamed Ma and Yang, ran the operation from their home in Nanqiao County, Fengxian District.
They are believed to have earned more than 18,000 yuan (US$2,900) in the two months prior to their arrest on March 24.
Police were alerted to the women's activities in February. The pair advertised their services under the WeChat nicknames "Mary Shanghai 92" and "qing13486."
"The first images we saw were fairly tame, but we soon realized that they were just there as a lure," police officer Chen Jun said.
After posing as a potential customer, Chen was offered a membership option.
"Once they thought we were genuine they gave us their Alipay account details, which we used to pay for the harder stuff," he said.
The Alipay account showed the women had received payments from people across the country, which was sufficient to stage a raid.
"I didn't think it was wrong to send selfies to people," the 30-something Yang said.
"Then one guy paid more so I sent him a sexy video."
