A man who stole a Bentley car then tried to return it after crashing it has been arrested, Jiading District Prosecutors' Office said yesterday.

The 25-year-old surnamed Liu saw the car in the parking area of a 4S shop last October. After finding the keys in the trunk he decided to steal the car and drove it to his home in Zhejiang Province.

Liu told his parents it belonged to a friend who had let him take it for a test drive.

However, a few days later, Liu crashed the car and his friend, after being told the story of the theft, advised him to take it back.

Liu drove the Bentley back to Shanghai and parked it where he'd found it. He also left a note, offering the owner compensation.

However, as he left the parking area, he was immediately apprehended by police.
