French company Club Med has been criticized by Shanghainese tourists for poor service and overcharging at its resort in Yabuli, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

One visitor, surnamed Qian, said the resort's Western restaurant was closed for the duration of his stay from February 15-20, while the hotpot restaurant opened only twice, and on both occasions he was refused entry as he had not made a reservation, the Xinmin Evening News reported yesterday.

As a result, Qian said he had no option but to eat buffets every day.

Qian said he paid more than 8,000 yuan (US$1,300) for what he was led to believe was an all-inclusive holiday for two. But when he asked if he could enrol for skiing lessons, he was told it would cost him a further 3,000 yuan.

The disgruntled traveler said that on his return to Shanghai he made several complaints to his local branch of Club Med, but without satisfaction.

Another local man, identified as Dennis, said he also failed to eat at the hotpot restaurant despite making several reservations, as the ski class he took finished after the lunchtime service.

When he raised the matter with staff he was told the complaint was a common one but that nothing could be done about it.

Club Med Shanghai said it had experienced staffing problems at its restaurants in Yabuli and promised to improve its service.
