Among the families in China with only one child, 47.1 percent wish to conceive a second one, and the rate is higher among those with daughters, according to a 2013-2014 survey conducted by CCTV.[Special coverage]
The results indicate that the willingness of couples to have a second child depends on their financial and intellectual status, as those with a higher social status tend to be more eager to raise a second child.
Whilst some are expressing concern that China will witness an era of baby boomers, the survey suggests that people's mindsets have changed. Due to the increasing costs of child-raising, many parents are choosing not to consider the option of having another child.
Variation according to geographical location can also be seen in the results. Metropolises tend to feature a lower rate of people willing to have a second child. Provinces and autonomous regions such as Guangxi, Guandong, Hainan, Shandong and Tibet rank highest in willingness.
