'Beijing Love Story' sets single-day release record on Valentine's Day

The Chinese romance film, "Beijing Love Story" set a single-day release record for a 2-D movie on Valentine's Day in China, grossing over 16.1 million US dollars as couples flocked to theaters.

The film also had a strong showing in North America, where it topped this weekend's specialty box office. Being shown on just nine screens, the romantic jaunt grossed about 128-thousand US dollars over a three-day period.

Domestically, the film has grossed exceeded the 200 million yuan benchmark over the weekend.

"Beijing Love Story" tells the tales of five couples of different age groups and has been referred to as "an Encyclopedia on Love" in China, as it covers a wide range of topics, such as marriage, divorce and extra-marital affairs.
