Unlicensed doctor gets 8 months in sex-selective abortion

An unlicensed doctor was sentenced to eight months in prison for performing an illegal, sex-selective abortion for at least one pregnant woman after gender testing, Jiading District People's Court said yesterday.

The female doctor, surnamed Fang, set up an unlawful clinic in her rental apartment in Jiading District in March 2012, prosecutors said.

She profited from providing ultrasound scans for pregnant mothers who wanted to know the gender of the fetus and providing abortions when they weren't happy with the unborn baby's gender, court officials said.
