Those who have been victims of malfunctioning elevators are now eligible for reimbursement in the cities of Nanjing, Nantong, Suzhou and Wuxi, as east China's Jiangsu Province launches its pilot program to ensure elevator safety, according to the Contemporary Express.

The new liability insurance program on elevators went into effect on Tuesday and will be introduced to other cities throughout the province.

Manufacturers and elevator installers will cover first-year insurance on new elevators. Equipment owners, users, maintenance companies and testing agencies will all shoulder a portion of the insurance premium starting from the second year.

Take a 10-story building with two households each per floor for example; each household may pay less than one yuan (about $ 0.16 USD) every year.

However, they may receive up to 5 million yuan ($ 826,500 USD) as compensation if they are riding an elevator while a malfunction occurs.

If a residential lift encounters an accident, the property management company will initially bear the main responsibility.

People who get stuck in an elevator car for two hours will get up to 200 yuan ($ 33USD) as mental injury compensation. This is the first trial operation of its kind in the country.
