Some 5,000 tickets are being refunded per day in Guangzhou Railway Station since the beginning of Chunyun, the 40-day travel period around the Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, which falls on Jan. 31.
Outside the ticket office, people queued up in front of the eight windows to refund their tickets, said a "New Express" report.
Many of the tickets being refunded are either standing-room-only tickets or for temporary trains.
In fear of being unable to go back home on time, passengers would buy any a ticket they can get even if it was a standing-room-only one.
Train tickets are very hard to get during the Spring Festival. Passengers have been complaining about the low efficiency of the official website and limited tickets. Although China Railway Corporation has accelerated its frequency of releasing tickets to purchase, tickets for those hot lines are being sold out at the first minute.
This year's Chunyun started from January 16 and will last till February 24. It is estimated that around 260 million people will travel by train during the travel rush.
