A man accused of gouging out his wife's eye was detained in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Nanguo Morning Post reported on Thursday.

The man, surnamed Long, turned himself in on December 13 after the attack, which caused his wife to lose her left eyeball, police said.

Long met Li, the victim, on the Internet in November 2012. He showed violent tendencies three months after they began a relationship, authorities said.

Li was beaten up when she refused to pay her boyfriend's debts and then was pressured to marry him, the report said. She sought a divorce in July but he refused.

Then she found a job to support herself in September in Yulin City, in the southeastern part of the Guangxi region.

On December 13, Li appeared at his wife's residence with the intention of attacking a man believed to be Li's boyfriend, the report said.

Li was kicked, fell and had her left eye gouged out when she tried to stop the fight, the report said.

The victim said she was afraid because her husband kept all the certificates, which kept her from seeking a divorce. She hoped to get help from a local women's federation, the report said.
