Excessive levels of lead have been found in children's jewelry on sale in Shanghai, the city quality watchdog said Monday.

Tests on children's silver bracelets made by Shanghai Cuida Arts and Crafts Co Ltd discovered "a serious quality problem" of excessive lead, said Shen Weimin, deputy director of the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.

Exposure to lead can harm the nervous and reproductive systems, cause anemia and stunt growth in children, among other conditions.

Other problems the bureau discovered were items containing less precious metal than required and labeling issues.

Among them, silver jewelry items made by the Shanghai outlet of Beijing-based HTDT Gold Co Ltd were found to contain less silver than indicated.

Six batches of substandard products were found among 100 batches of precious metal products tested.

These products have been taken off the shelves.
