The Pudong New Area government denied a man had been beaten to death over a property dispute as had been reported earlier.

The government said on Saturday in a statement that Shen Yong died of a sudden illness and had no external injuries on his body.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning. Management company officials came to a house on Beiai Road. Shen and his mother were asked to move because of complaints from the home owner that they were illegally occupying the property.

Shen was asked to leave. When he got into a car arranged by the management company, he looked pale and lost consciousness, the driver said.

An ambulance was called and Shen was rushed to Renji Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Some online posts had claimed some men broke into the house and beat Shen to death after he had appealed to authorities over a property dispute.

The Pudong government statement refuted these claims and said Shen's family could request an autopsy.
