Over 4,000 gambling machines were destroyed in a factory in Baoshan District Thursday, local police said.

Police seized the machines during a crackdown this month ahead of the summer vacation for students.

They shut down about 120 unlicensed entertainment venues and arrested more than 400 suspects. Illegal profits amounting to 140,000 yuan (US$22,812) were seized.

Two more venues were raided by police on July 18. Twenty-five people were caught in Songjiang District and another 30 were arrested in Minhang District when they were gambling on the machines.

"We got the names of all the suspects and the addresses of the entertainment venues on our blacklist which we keep updating," Han Ling, a Shanghai police officer, said.

"People on the list will not be allowed to open entertainment venues again and such venues won't be located in the recorded addresses."

The components from the crushed gambling machines will be reused.
