A UN conference in support of a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is underway in Beijing.

The 2-day meeting is meant to try to spur more international engagement in the Palestinian issue.

In opening the meeting, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco admits there are a number of challenges to be tackled.

"It is the firm view of the United Nations secretariat that achieving a two-State solution is more urgent than ever in the increasingly unstable regional context, and that negotiations remain the only way towards that end."

Fernandez-Taranco also says the situation in Syria could bring dangerous effect to the region.

He also notes tensions have been mounting in the West Bank because of continued Israeli settlement construction.

Israeli settlements have increased 176-percent in the first quarter of this year.

Chinese assistant Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu says practical steps need to be taken.

"The immediate priority is to take credible steps to stop settlement activities, end violence against innocent civilians, lift the blockade of the Gaza strip and properly handle the issue of Palestinian prisoners in order to remove obstacles and foster a good atmosphere for peaceful talks."

The two day meeting includes observers from over 40 governments and intergovernmental organizations.
