Local film buffs can watch some 300 Chinese and foreign films in 25 cinemas during the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival to be held from June 15 to 23.

The International Film Panorama, a major festival event, will screen the works of American director Oliver Stone, British film maker Tom Hooper, Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu and Chinese director Tang Xiaodan.

Nine silent films made by British director and master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, have been restored and will be shown for the first time in Asia during the festival. All these films were shot between 1925 and 1929, including Hitchcock's first film, "The Pleasure Garden."

The festival will also screen nine films starring the late Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung, including "Farewell, My Concubine," "Days of Being Wild," and "Rouge."

Other masterpieces for viewing at the festival include Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta," Bernardo Bertolucci's "Me and You," British thriller "Berberian Sound Studio" and India's Oscar nominee "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India."

Yu Kai, an official with the festival's organizing committee, said the International Film Panorama is expected to draw more than 200,000 viewers this year. "All the films are selected out of more than 1,000 entries from 112 countries and regions. They cover a wide range of genres," Yu said.

Shanghai Film Art Center, Yonghua Cinema, Stellar Cinema City, Peace Cinema and Studio City Cinema are among the 25 theaters to screen festival films with English and Chinese subtitles.

Ticket sales will start on June 8 at the theaters and via www.ticket2010.com and www.gewara.com. The tickets are priced between 40 yuan (US$6.45) and 60 yuan.
