Duck meat, chicken and pork have been detected in suspicious mutton samples following DNA tests by local authorities in south China's Shenzhen city, the Southern Metropolis Daily reports.

The local authorities have sealed the samples taken from a farm produce wholesale market and is investigating the source and distribution of the fake mutton.

The Shenzhen Academy of Metrology and Quality Inspection, the testing agency, says at present it is still technically impossible to pinpoint the exact amount of fowl meat in any given samples. As a result, the authorities may be left in a conundrum on how to appropriately punish merchants who sell fake mutton.

The latest case came as a total of 904 people in China were recently captured during a three-month campaign involving meat-related crimes such as producing fake beef and mutton made from rat and fox.

The Ministry of Public Security said that since January 25, police had uncovered 382 cases involving meat-related offenses, and seized more than 20,000 tons of illegal products.

Crimes also included the production of water-injected meat, the use of chemicals while processing products, as well as the selling of diseased and fake meat.
