Mutton seized from 13 hot pot restaurants

2013-05-08 08:49 Shanghai Daily     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

The questionable mutton made from pork and duck meat were also found to have been sold in 13 other local hot pot restaurants and all of them have been seized, the city's food safety authorities said yesterday.

The 13 hot restaurants are all in the suburbs but none of them are big-name chains, claimed Yan Zuqiang, director of Shanghai Food Safety Office.

"I can say with responsibility that no famous hot pot chain stores are among the restaurants selling the questionable mutton," Yan said.

The Xinpin Wholesale Market on Caobao Road is under investigation for selling the mutton even as the authorities are checking out if there are any other sources of the mutton.

Yan declined to identify the restaurants, only saying that "police are still investigating the case."

The P-Shang Dolar Hot Pot outlet in Zhoupu Town in the Pudong New Area was sealed on Monday and a total of 113 kilograms of the questionable mutton were seized from the restaurant.
