A newborn girl was found abandoned in a public toilet in Hongkou District yesterday morning. Her cry alerted a resident who lives just five meters away from the toilet and she was saved in time. Police are now looking for her parents.

The man, surnamed Ding, said he found the infant inside an excrement bin in the toilet on Changzhi Road E. around 7:15am. "She was naked with an uncut umbilical cord. Luckily her head got stuck at the bin mouth so she could breathe," Ding said.

Some neighbors said they emptied their chamber pots at the bin that morning and a sanitation worker even rinsed the bin with a hose around 7am.

"The girl was very white and the worker might take her for an abandoned doll," said another resident surnamed Zhang.

Ding reported to the police immediately and the girl was picked up at 7:20am. "She was crying and her body was icy cold," said a police officer at the scene.

The baby was sent to the Xinhua Hospital where doctors dealt with the placenta and umbilical cord and found no disease or deformity in her. The girl was then transferred to the Hongkou Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for further treatment.
