Tsinghua University held a meeting Saturday to reestablish its School of Humanities. Tsinghua first opened the school 84 years ago, attracting many students and famous professors.

The new school will have four departments, including literature, history and philosophy, and about 20 research institutes, with about 2,300 students.

Tsinghua was once hailed as an epicenter of the humanities with famous scholarly figures like Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinke and Zhao Yuanren teaching at the university in the early 20th century.

However, Tsinghua discontinued its literature and law schools in 1952 according to edicts from the Ministry of Education, and since then has focused its reputation on its engineering program.
