Fishermen saved after boat sank off Shanghai

2012-06-12 11:22 Shanghai Daily     Web Editor: Zang Kejia comment

Three fishermen were rescued at sea off Shanghai early this morning after their boat hit a rock and sank, local marine police said.

The police was alerted about 3am that the wrecked boat was sinking and three fishermen were waiting for rescue near Sheshan Island in the East China Sea.

But the rescue operation was delayed by heavy fog and a marine patrol boat did not reach the scene until 6am.

With the help of another fishing boat nearby, the fishermen were saved by 7am before their boat sank to the bottom of the sea, police said.

The boat owner, surnamed Chen, said they were from Jiangsu Province and wanted to have their boat repaired in Shanghai before the current fishing ban ends in August.

But they were not familiar with the navigation routes around Shanghai and the heavy fog added to their plight, Chen said.

Port authorities said the sunken boat will be salvaged soon.
